Feeling Lost, Desperate, or Confused on What to Feed Your Cat?

Knowing what to feed your cat should be simple, but unfortunately, there is so much contradicting information that it can be challenging to put together a simple criterion for feeding your pet. Vitality Science is here to help you today! While there is a time and place to get lost in the more nuanced ideas about supplementation and nutrition, we want to feed our beloved pets food that will boost their vitality and give them the best life possible.

Using Increments to Introduce New Food to Your Pet

At Vitality Science, we approach diet and nutrition with a keen eye for experimentation. We believe the best way to know whether something works is to reduce the number of variables and slowly make changes. This allows you, the owner, to notice when something is disturbing your pet’s health or digestive comfort and isolate what that might be so you can avoid it in the future.

Naturally, our pets are just like us in that some have allergies and sensitivities to certain foods. Taking this experimental approach will require more diligence upfront but save you time and money in the long run while also maximizing your pet’s happiness—the most important thing.

Try to restrict new foods to a single protein and limited ingredients to clarify what works and what doesn’t.

What You Shouldn’t Feed Your Cat

In life, we should never focus first on the negatives; when it comes to a diet, it’s essential to know what to avoid before deciding what to eat. For example, giving your cat foods that they do not digest well or foods that will likely create inflammation in their GI tract is a sure-fire way to increase their risk for chronic diseases, which are rising in cats and dogs.

Avoid Feeding Your Cat Too Many Grains

Many people wonder if they can justifiably live a vegan lifestyle while feeding their pets animal products. The reality is that animals are far less adaptable than humans. Cats, for example, thrive only on a largely meat-based diet and are often referred to as “obligate carnivores.” They are accustomed to eating food primarily comprised of fat and protein, with little in the way of carbs.

It’s not that carbs are inherently toxic to cats, but rather that the ability for your cat to properly digest carbohydrates in larger quantities is not at all significant nor ideal. Unfortunately, this is not unusual, as grains are a very hit or miss source of nutrition, even when it comes to people. This is a stark comparison to dogs; omnivores can thrive on a more varied diet and are well adapted to eating grains.

Foods such as sweet potatoes appear significantly more tolerable than wheat/grain products. Caution: raw potatoes are never okay to give to your pet cat; they are toxic and can cause significant harm to them. Additionally, feeding your cat regular potatoes is ill-advised. Sweet potatoes are okay because they belong to a different family of foods.

TThe bottom line, avoid feeding too many grains such as wheat, corn, barley, etc.

Avoid These If Your Cat Has a Sensitive Stomach

Our Golden Rule when dealing with immune-compromised or animals with sensitive GI tracts is this: avoid corn, wheat, soy, chicken, turkey, or duck. Sensitive stomachs benefit from eating gentler proteins such as lamb, venison, rabbit, or tuna.

A recipe we stand by is a Congee, which is a type of porridge originating in China.

Bring to a boil, then simmer for 1 hour.

  • 1c. organic jasmine rice
  • 5c. filtered water

Then, bake white fish in the filtered water. Put it together by adding 30% of the congee rice, 50% of the fish, and add a dollop of organic canned pumpkin to enliven the meal for your pet.

Raw Pet Food is Preferred for Cats

Raw pet food is preferable for most animals compared to highly processed and preserved mainstream food products in supermarkets and pet stores (though many pet stores have started carrying more health-conscious products/raw food). However, some animals that have been domesticated may have issues with raw food as they are no longer accustomed to it. As suggested earlier, making incremental changes can help you determine whether raw pet food will be suitable for your cat.
