Treating Dog Diarrhea
Treating diarrhea in a dog is no different
than treating any illness, First you must determine the actual cause. Many times
the cause is mental stress. That’s easy, you simply give your dog a double
dose or two, of Pet Flora, and before you could be seen by a vet (or dog psychologist)
your dogs’ bowel is normal.
Although there are many causes of stress,
there are so many other possible causes for dog diarrhea that I could not possibly
list them here. But chances are, unknowingly of course, the decisions you’re
making are the cause!
The Usual Suspects
Commercial Dog Food: Consumers seem unaware that commercial food is little more than bulk. Sorely
lacking nutritional value, it can actually be the cause of diarrhea in dogs.
Shelf life may not be as indicated on the label. And most dry foods are sprayed
with recycled restaurant fry grease just to give it some flavor! In a high heat
environment, this grease can get funky, fast!
Drinking Water: Municipal water is treated with chlorine to
prevent pathogens from making us sick. However, if you don’t filter your
water before consuming it, it’s going to do the same thing in your dogs’
gut- kill the bacteria. The fact is your dogs’ digestive system needs
a balance of bacteria at all times.
Digestion: Digestion is a time sensitive process; either too
long or too short and GI and immune problems soon develop. Frequent loose stools
soon lead to dehydration and mineral loss. Slow movements become breeding grounds
for pathogens.

“Fully 90%
of all chronic diseases are caused by an unhealthy intestinal system."
The Royal Society of Medicine of Great Britain |
The underlying cause of dog diarrhea is that their digestive
system lacks the variety, quantity, and steady supply of micorflora and microorganisms
needed to maintain a constant balance.
The job of these microorganisms is to break down the food, so any nutritional
value can be completely absorbed, and the waste eliminated in a timely fashion.
Where do SBOs come from? Not from food.
Your dog’s wild relatives supplement their diet by eating grass and soil,
which are the sources of these soil-based microorganisms (SBOs) in nature. SBOs
were once abundant but decades of pesticides, insecticides, and chemical run
off have taken their toll. Yet it is precisely these micronutrients that are
the missing link to intestinal balance!
Prescription Medication vs Natural Remedies
It’s no secret that medication has side effects. The two most frequently
prescribed by vets are antibiotics, such as Flagyl and anti-inflammatories,
such as prednisone.
Antibiotics: Antibiotics are indiscriminant killers. The treatment
plan with antibiotics; withhold food and water for 24-48 hours. You would hope
vets would be on the lookout to offer you something easier on your dog than
this. Still…
Pharmaceutical Anti-Inflammatories: The problem area is the
intestinal wall. It is your dogs’ “life line”. Once it gets
acutely inflamed, waste products cannot pass through to be eliminated; neither
can nutrients be absorbed. In such situations, vets often recommend Prednisone
However, Prednisone is a short term benefit and a long term disaster! It’s
a feel good masking agent with numerous dangerous side effects. You have to
be very careful about dosing up and then again back down. Many animals that
get on prednisone never get off.
|
Dear Vet: Come on, this is the
21st Century; people are hip to natural remedies. I am sure many of you
have tried various natural remedies with negligible results, but knowing
what we know about antibiotics and prednisone one must be vigilant to
find alternatives. We’re here! |
Natural Remedies: The idea behind any natural
remedy for cat and dog diarrhea is to help the animal heal itself. When you have the right products, the natural
approach produces seeming miracles.
Probiotics: The importance of probiotics in the digestive system
is that, in sufficient quantities, they keep the pathogenic bacteria in check.
They are necessary to digest, absorb nutrients, and eliminate food.
Many people think that the only reason why animals eat grass is that their stomach
is upset. That is incorrect. What many don’t realize is the dog is also
eating the dirt around the grass roots. Why? For the soil based organisms needed
to maintain digestive balance.
Some vets and customers have tried dairy-based probiotics, like acidophilus,
or yogurt. No wonder they are hesitant to try more natural remedies. Your dogs’
strong stomach acids kill most of the strains before they can get to where they
need to go. Vets who are using Pet Flora are getting great results, even with
IBS!
